    Learn How to Measure Your Head and Determine Your Hat Size

    So you have found the perfect hat, but will it fit like a glove or slip off with the wind? Fashionable Hats wants to make sure that your hats always look sophisticated and well-fitted to your head shape.

    This guide helps you determine the right hat size so that you always look stylish. Our custom measuring tool allows you to find the right circumference and size with ease.

    Option 1:

    How to Measure Your Head and Hat Size Using String and Measuring Tape

    This is the traditional way that you can use at home to find your hat size, but it's much easier to use the head measuring device because it already has the inches printed on the tape measure.

    What You'll Need Without Tool

    • String or ribbon
    • Ruler
    • Hat sizing chart
    • Pen or marker

    Step 1: Use a Piece of String to Measure Your Head

    Measuring Head With String

    With the piece of string in your hands, wrap it around the back of your head just slightly above your ears or about 1/8 of an inch higher than your ear tip.

    Pull the string around to meet at the center of your forehead just above your eyebrows. If you like your hat to sit a bit higher, you can pull the string around your head exactly match how your hat rests on your head.

    It's important that you don't pull the string too tight. Rather, the string should fit comfortably around your forehead so that it isn't too tight or loose. This should feel exactly the way you want your hat to feel as it rests on your head.

    You can mark the distance where the string meets with a pen or marker.


    Step 2: Measure the String with a Ruler

    Measuring Head With String

    Once you have marked the point of circumference on the string, you can lay it flat and place a ruler underneath to find the circumference in inches. You will likely have to measure the size to the nearest 1/8 of an inch.


    Step 3: Match the Circumference to the Hat Sizing Chart

    Once you have used the string or head measuring device to find your circumference, you'll have the exact measurements needed to use with the hat sizing chart. For example, if you found that your head measures 22 inches overall, then you would pick a hat size of medium or fitted size of 7 to 7 1/8" circumference.

    Things to Keep in Mind

    Hat sizing is really based on your comfort level as well. If you prefer that a hat fits snugly for certain designs or you want a cap that fits slightly loose, you should account for that in your sizing. Your comfort matters most of all when picking the true hat size.

    In addition, there are other factors to consider, such as your hairstyle. A hat that is too tight can make your hair stick out in odd ways. Materials and brands can also fit differently. For example, leather and corduroy may not fit the same hat size.

    Women's Hat Sizes

    Most women's hat sizes are one size only, but that's not the case with Fashionable Hats. Female head sizes range from 21 inches to 23 inches in circumference. Actual sizes also range depending on the designer. For example, some hats are made for youth sizes, and others come with adjustable bands to keep the hat in place. Whether you are looking for a wide brim hat, fedora, or baseball cap, you can measure your custom head size with Fashionable Hats that you can use to shop for all types of hats in the future.

    Men's Hat Sizes

    When you shop for hats for men, you will typically find them listed as one size only. Sunday hats, fedoras, caps, and others fall between 21 and 24 inches for men. It can be difficult to find the right hat for a larger head size, which is why custom sizing matters. Carefully measuring your head is much better than using a hat sizing chart, however you can use both methods to determine your size.

    Stratoliner Flies USA to Japan!

    A few years ago I bought my first Stetson, a felt Stratoliner, which was the best hat I've ever owned. This year, COVID finally calming down, I was going to visit family in the USA, and saw the Hemp Stratoliner Fedora, and knew it was The One I HAD to Have. Alas, sold out everywhere, my trip getting closer, I found exactly what I wanted here at Fashionable Hats, and purchased immediately. Three fantastic weeks and a 4000 mile road trip later, I bonded with this gorgeous, pliable, comfortable headcover, and brought it home with me to Japan. Aaaaagghh! I got unpacked, and no hat! In the frenzy of deplaning after 14 hours, it had slipped off my duffle bag into the depths of the overhead bin. I was devastated. I called up the airlines, but nothing ... until the next morning I got a call, "We found your Stetson." I raced to the airport to retrieve my "friend," and was told, "That's a nice hat, glad you got it back." Indeed.

    Perfect Ha, Perfect service

    Great hat. I purchased a Stetson Stratiliner past winter and wore it every day and liked it so much that I started to look for one in Hemp Natural for summer days. Supply for this hat is exceptionally low and Stetson is not expecting full supply before June or July. I was able to find one in my size at Fashionable Hats which I ordered immediately. Hat arrived in two days, incredibly happy to find one. Fashionable Hats is my preferred Hat shop.

    Buy a smaller size...

    It is a beautiful hat. I have two issues with it: the size ran WAY LARGE. I have other 7 1/4 Stetson hats and they have been spot on on sizing. This one I had to use sizers in to the tune of about a size and a half to get it to fit. Also when I flip down the brim in front it sits crooked. I guess I will have to try to "train" the hat to get it to look right. Other than than it appears to be very well-made and I love the color. No reflection on Fashionable Hats, though. The order was well packaged and sent quickly. They are a great seller!
